Case Study: Modernizing the User Interface of High-Precision Laser Cutters & Welders

by | Jun 18, 2019

From time to time, we like to share case studies of what we’ve been working on here at Intertech. It gives insight into the type of work we do, what you can expect if you work with Intertech to solve your software needs, and what it’s like to work as a consultant for Intertech on challenging projects.

Our most recent case study features the work we did for a company that develops and produces laser manufacturing equipment for use in the healthcare, telecom, and aerospace industries. Intertech recommended a modern user interface using the popular React JavaScript framework deployed inside an Electron wrapper for cross-platform and offline support. Thanks to our work, customer interactions with the machinery are more intuitive and responsive. Additionally, it’s now easier for the client’s development team to add new features in the future.

Proof of Concept for a Parent Company

In this case study, the client was a recently-acquired division of a larger precision manufacturing company. The division managers and executives wanted to produce a proof of concept of the new user interface for their parent company to review before tackling the project full-on. Intertech’s agile approach allowed our consultants to quickly assemble a working minimum viable product that the parent company’s executives could review.

After a warm reception from executives, our consultants were able to adjust development priorities to incorporate client feedback. Working in sprints on an agile basis, Intertech worked alongside the client’s internal development team to implement new features and functionality that were important to client satisfaction.

Continuous Integration & Delivery

In addition to the technical leadership Intertech provided in choosing and implementing a JavaScript framework, our consultants also led the way on DevOps fundamentals for the client’s team. Over the course of the project, our consultants moved the client’s version control from Team Foundation Server over to Git. This allowed our consultants to also implement modern continuous testing, integration, and delivery.

As developers spend less time on maintenance, infrastructure, and overhead, they get to spend more time on writing new features for customers. The new features are valuable to customers, but we’ve also found that developers who ship code more often are happier employees. In today’s competitive market for developer talent, the importance of job satisfaction on your dev team can’t be overstated. Using modern DevOps practices is a great way to improve morale and reduce the costs associated with churn on the dev team.
