This leading marine products manufacturer turned to Intertech for a state-of-the-art diagnostic tool for its extensive OEM and dealer technician network. Intertech’s custom WPF application enabled the capture of real-time data feeds from engines, allowing technicians to diagnose and solve customer problems faster and more efficiently with previously unavailable capture and playback features.
This manufacturer of marine products, a division of a major corporation on the New York Stock Exchange, is a world-class manufacturer of marine products (engines, gauges & controls, propellers, inflatable boats, parts & accessories). Its mission: powering boats better and more reliably than any competitor, which translates into great passion for quality, performance and value. It’s all about making sure customers are deeply satisfied. Not surprisingly, this marine products manufacturer offers comprehensive warranty coverage and product support to its customers. This is backed up by one of the most extensive dealer networks in the marine industry, with more than 4,300 dealers across the United States and Canada. Many of its dealers are trained technicians, with schooling in outboards and stern drives, and the latest offerings in controls, gauges, propellers, and parts and accessories. Ensuring that its dealer technicians are highly qualified is critical to the company’s success. To ensure that the dealer network could remain competitive, the company engaged Intertech to design and build an engine diagnostic charting tool capable of displaying diagnostic data points from a designated module. This represented a state-of-the-art trouble shooting tool for the company’s dealers and OEMs.
Intertech deployed an experienced team, including a software architect, two developers and a senior Scrum Master, to ensure the CDS G3 application could be completed before winter and the busy boat show season. The application was designed to meet high performance standards, ensuring that: • Data points could be displayed in either streaming data mode as a strip chart or in stored data mode as a playback chart; • The charting component was able to accept configuration parameters from the CDS G3 application for each chart and plot the data points in at least 20 data points per second; • The charting component could tie into the existing CDS g3’s localization, font set and other layout settings. Despite considerable time and technical challenges, daily huddles and smooth communication between Intertech and the customer kept the project moving ahead in a positive fashion. In addition, technical staff from Intertech provided mentoring and knowledge transfer to the client’s technical staff to ensure a fully integrated product that could be supported by the customer.
The project was completed precisely according to each specification. The result was a vastly improved engine monitoring capability complete with previously unavailable capture and playback features. Intertech completed the project ahead of schedule, even though the client company did not expect this. The new tool allowed Intertech’s client to provide better service to its dealers and OEMs, who, in turn, could do a better job servicing the client’s products on behalf of customers. The Intertech team exceeded expectations for this satisfied customer, earning kudos for its ability to rise to a technical challenge, partner with a valued client and exceed business objectives.
From the day it was founded in 1991 by local entrepreneur Tom Salonek, Intertech has been a company with an important difference: unwavering commitment to customers, employees and the broader community through excellent work, smart workplace and financial management, and creative philanthropic involvement.
