A leading renewable energy consultancy and operations management company approached Intertech for additional coding capacity and expertise to complete an upgrade of their forecasting and optimization platform. Our consultants worked alongside the client’s development team, providing support, knowledge, and heads-down coding hours to complete a custom-assembled energy forecasting model. These models predict future maintenance to reduce down time, optimize grid layout, and reduce cost.
The client provides energy forecasting and optimization services to wind and solar energy companies. This includes planning for new projects and optimizing existing facilities. Previously, they spent millions of dollars per year on third party software to run their forecasting and diagnostics. However, those tools were disparate and didn’t fit all the client’s needs. They realized that for a similar investment they could combine existing software into custom, proprietary applications with fewer licensing costs.
Initially, the client chose to pursue development internally with their own software team. As development got underway, it became apparent that the client’s development team didn’t have enough manpower to complete the applications in a timely manner. The client contacted Intertech to add seasoned programmers to their development team.
Since the client had already begun work on the project, Intertech’s consultants needed to quickly learn the existing codebase and project plan. Four Intertech consultants integrated into the client’s various scrum teams, based on need and consultant expertise.
The client purchased several separate tools that needed to be combined and integrated into their current software. Our Intertech consultants worked alongside the client’s developers in the client’s local Minnesota office. Since our consultants have experience in a wide variety of past projects, they were able to share knowledge and expertise with the client’s team. In some cases, our Intertech consultants moved around between teams after a few weeks because a consultant’s specific experience could benefit another team.
With Intertech’s help, the client’s development team has released and iterated on a highly customizable analytics platform that’s on the cutting edge for the industry. The application uses Docker containers and Amazon Web Services to scale to run many complex simulations in parallel. Those containers can then spool down when not in use, saving money through good load optimization.
Developing a proprietary solution gave the client control over the components included in the application. It also meant cutting licensing costs for software they used previously. The result is a faster, more customized, and more cost effective application.
From the day it was founded in 1991 by local entrepreneur Tom Salonek, Intertech has been a company with an important difference: unwavering commitment to customers, employees and the broader community through excellent work, smart workplace and financial management, and creative philanthropic involvement.
