Project Requirements
The client’s flagship application is a software as a service product that allows customers to look up estates of the deceased that have entered probate. Companies can file claims against the deceased’s estate as part of the probate process if the deceased had outstanding debts. The client’s application automates the entire process of searching 3.5 million probate estates in the country and filing claims against those estates on behalf of creditors, financial institutions, healthcare providers, and governments.
The original probate locator application had been very successful. Over $1 billion in claims had been filed through the software. However, the original design of the application using Adobe Flex had become antiquated. Moreover, new better front-end options are now available. As a result, the client decided it was time to update the application’s front-end using a modern single-page application approach.
Result
Once Intertech was selected and evaluated the client’s system, they were able to tighten the estimate for implementation down to 12 weeks. 12 weeks from the start date, the application was fully implemented and on schedule.
The application deployed successfully and as a result of the training they received from Intertech, the client’s development team can maintain and add to the application independently under an agile methodology. A.
React is a great choice for this application’s front end. The community and resources around React allow the probate application to stay on the cutting edge of web development. As a result, the application can leverage new open source tools and be easily extended. It also benefits from modern testing, linting, and other code quality checks as part of the development pipeline.
Overview
The client chose React before engaging Intertech. However, they relied on Intertech’s expertise to help finalize the decision. In addition to React components, the application also involved components written in Typescript. Critically important, the project involved a rewrite of the application’s web services from SOAP messaging protocol to REST’s uniform operations. Finally, the entire application was bundled together using a custom Webpack configuration.
An important part of the refresh was creating a modern UI that felt updated. However, the client also wanted the new UI to mirror the old implementation closely. Too stark of a redesign would confuse users. Because this application is used both internally and by customers, a smooth transition was a top priority. Intertech worked directly with the client’s team in design meetings to imagine and implement the new React-driven UI.
Furthermore, the client had direct access to Intertech resources as needed, providing side-by-side mentorship to the client’s developers on the technologies they’d be using.
As a result of this project, maintenance overhead is lower, it’s easy to add new features, and customers experience fewer browser and Flash version issues.
