Automated Probate Processing and Locator Application
Understanding the Legal Services industry is one thing. Understanding the technology you currently use and the updates you should consider is another.
Case Study: Flagship legal services’ application that automated the entry process and searched over 3.5 million probate estates throughout the country to assist in filing claims against those estates on behalf of creditors, financial institutions, healthcare providers, and governments was a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product and had become outdated and overly expensive.

Create New Probate Locator UI While Revitalizing Current System – From Legacy SaaS Software to New Open Source Proprietary Tools – To Assist With Future Lower Cost Lifecycle Extensions
Project Requirements
The current legal services probate locator application has been very successful. Over $1 billion in claims have been filed through the software. However, the original design of the application in Adobe Flex has become antiquated. Many modern browsers are dropping support for Flash. Moreover, new, better, and safer front-end options are available. As a result, the client decided it was time to update the application’s front-end application using a modern single-page application approach.
Result
Intertech estimated the project would take 12 weeks to implement. Twelve weeks from the start date, the application was fully implemented on schedule and successfully deployed as predicted. Using React for this application’s front end, partially because of the strong community and resources around React, the probate application will stay on the cutting edge of web development for some time. As a result, the application can leverage new open source tools and be easily extended. It also benefits from modern testing, linting, and other code quality checks as part of the development pipeline. And finally, as a result of the mentoring the company received from Intertech during the build, the client’s development team can now maintain and add to the application independently.
Overview
The client chose React prior to engaging Intertech. However, they relied on Intertech’s expertise to help finalize the decision. In addition to the React components, the application also involved components written in Typescript. Critically, the project also included a rewrite of the application’s web services from SOAP messaging protocol to REST’s uniform operations. Finally, the entire application was bundled together using a custom Webpack configuration.
A crucial part of the refresh was creating a modern UI that felt updated. However, the client also wanted the new UI to mirror the old implementation closely. Too stark of a redesign would confuse users. Because this application is used both internally and by customers, a smooth transition was a top priority. Our expert Intertech consultant worked directly with the client’s team in design meetings to imagine and implement the new React-driven UI.
Furthermore, our consultant worked directly in the client’s office every day. Consequently, the client had direct access to the consultant as needed. In addition, our consultant was able to provide side-by-side mentorship to the client’s developers on the technologies they’d be using.
The Fastest Way To Build Software Is “Right” The First Time!
Understanding your industry is one thing. Understanding the technology you are using is another. When you read studies that tell you that 75% of projects are doomed from the beginning, it has to make you pause before signing your name to the outcome.
Consider letting our proven professionals take a look at your project. They’ve seen what can go wrong and know how to avoid costly errors.
We build custom software from start to finish. We plug into your environment with the proven expertise you need for us to work independently or in co-development. And, we bring the soft-skills that make the task enjoyable, and the experience to leave your team stronger and ready to take over.

Intertech Software Quality Assurance Consultant
Jim Jagow
Imagine the attention to detail, patience, and persistence required to raise Monarch butterflies from eggs to maturity, and you’ll understand what makes Jim Jagow tick. Jim and his daughter recently undertook a large Monarch project as something fun to do together to benefit the environment. But, Jim says with a laugh, it’s the perfect example of why he thrives as a Software Quality Assurance Consultant. Jim prefers to “go deep” on projects, which explains why he has worked on exactly three projects during his time with Intertech, including the highly successful e-charging project for the state of Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Jim’s tenure at Intertech began as a subcontractor; 11 years later, he joined as a full-time employee. “We like to joke I went through the longest interview process of any employee here,” he says. Jim previously held positions selling, supporting, demonstrating, and installing software.
“It’s not at all important to get it right the first time. It’s vitally important to get it right the last time.”

What is your role at Intertech?
My role is to work with developers to make their projects perfect. I imagine the end-user and work to verify that not only will the application work but that the end-user will have a positive experience using it. The best-designed software in the world is worthless if people can’t or won’t use it.
Sideline
I used to do a lot of hunting and fishing, but since I married and the kids came along, I focus more on gardening now. Both of my parents had farms in western Minnesota, so I guess growing things is in my blood. It’s fun getting my kids involved with it too.
