Press Release: Intertech harnesses Microsoft technologies to develop a custom enterprise technology solution for StayWell Health Management Systems

FINAL Intertech harnesses Microsoft technologies to develop a custom enterprise technology solution for StayWell Health Management Systems “Intertech used Microsoft technology to create a significant, scaleable solution that is at the heart of HealthGuide, our enterprise health-related application,” says Nancy Gangelhoff, who manages the IT Department for StayWell. “In our Management Reporting module, leveraging Office and Windows saves us hours, and in some cases days, to produce custom reports that previously were created by individual systems and combined by hand. This obviously translates into considerable cost savings.” Challenge StayWell Health Management provides health and wellness programs to Fortune 1000 organizations. Client data is gathered using paper and online surveys. The implementation of health-related programs means StayWell annually must generate hundreds of follow-on management reports, each approximately 100 pages in length. An outdated system used custom programming, a third-party drawing package, and manual processes to create the reports that contain graphs, tables, and appendix data that provide detailed analysis of the health status of employees and health and productivity improvements over time. Management, account executives, and IT personnel desired a faster, more professional management reporting solution for StayWell’s customers. StayWell, a ten-year Intertech Software and Intertech-Inc customer, needed a solution that integrated with its existing application and leveraged standard, proven software. Working with StayWell’s internal IT staff, Intertech Software designed a solution using Microsoft Office. “We didn’t want to re-invent the wheel and wanted to create a world-class document that represented the quality solutions we deliver for our customers,” says Gangelhoff. “When we look at competing technologies or a full custom solution, we know leveraging Microsoft technologies from Microsoft Office to .NET provides a reliable, proven solution. Based on how the production of our Management Reports is working today, we know we made the right decision,” Solution Before developing the solution, Intertech Software and StayWell defined the objectives of the new solution: · Improving efficiency · Controlling investment · Removing manual processes · Integrating with existing systems · Leveraging proven technology “Our approach to problem solving is making sure we understand the problem and define the expectations before we engage,” says Intertech Software founder and CEO Tom Salonek. “In leveraging Office and integrating with the enterprise application, we were able to create a system that met all of the primary objectives.” Leveraging the Enterprise Application and Microsoft Office The solution was a module integrated into an n-tier enterprise Microsoft COM based application. The solution was built using Visual Basic 6.0, Visual C++ 6.0, Microsoft Office, COM, and ADO connecting to an Oracle 8i database. Visual Studio with integrated Visual SourceSafe was the development environment. The application, except for Internet-based web applications, runs in a Microsoft Windows environment. The report generation interface was a module integrated into the HealthGuide application. It was built using Visual Basic 6.0. Using this module, the user selects approximately 50 different reporting options. Report options vary based on the types of program being used by the customer, demographics, print and charting options. After defining the report, the application creates a Microsoft Word document that has embedded Excel charts, tables, and appendix data. New System Offers Multiple Benefits · Better customer service. The new system means StayWell account executives can quickly produce management reports after the data has been collected and can communicate the productivity and cost gains in a professional and easy-to-understand format. · Impressive time and cost savings. Reports that took hours or days are now produced in minutes. · Greater efficiency. The solution was an excellent fit with the company’s systems because it built on the existing database tables and is deployed along with revisions to the existing suite of client workstation executables and components. Because StayWell uses Microsoft Office as its personal productivity tool it was easy to use an existing and well-known user tool, Microsoft Word. “We’ve used Microsoft technologies for years and our team appreciates the integration between the technologies, as well as the power and ease-of-use in their tools,” says Salonek. “Without question, StayWell has continued to show technology leadership in its use of Microsoft-related solutions. To guide this leadership our training company, Intertech-Inc, has provided a great resource for training our customers, such as StayWell, as well as Intertech Software project teams.” What’s Next The next phase of development is a new report designed for the individual participants of the program. Using ASP.NET, and C# .NET report text will be generated as an XML document, which will be presented in two ways. First, the XML will be converted into an on-line report for each individual participant using XSL stylesheets. Second, a C# .NET rendering engine will merge the same XML into a Microsoft Word document for paper printing batches of reports for direct mailing to the participants.
