The proof? He graduated from the program in 1997. His company was ranked as number 243 in Inc.’s list of the 500 fastest growing companies between 1996 and 1999 and again from 1997 to 2000. According to Deloitte and Touche, the company is ranked 16th on the list of the fastest growing technical companies in Minnesota from 1996 to 1999. And, Salonek says, “We’re not done!” Salonek has catapulted Intertech Software into one of the fastest growing companies in Minnesota by applying best practices of strategic management to his organization. He also uses many of the tools and techniques he learned in the Mini MBA in Leading Growing Companies to help him direct and map his business’ future. Salonek chose the Mini MBA in Leading Growing Companies because it was designed for leaders who faced the same core issues he was facing: financial performance, strategy development, strategic leadership and revenue growth. He learned new tools and techniques to deal with those issues, and he found a peer group who were facing similar issues and willing to share ideas and experiences. He valued the input of his fellow classmates—people just like him. “These were folks who were accountable and driven by results.” He is still in touch with a software company CEO who he met in class. Salonek also appreciates the practicality of the program and the instructors’ relevant experience. One instructor, Chris Bergoff, hammered home the importance of communication within a company as he talked about his own company’s open book policy—even to partner companies. “Working with a partner, [Bergoff’s company] can say, ‘This is what we think we can afford. Here are our costs. Here are the profits we want.’” Salonek was impressed with that policy because, as he puts it, there’s no more guessing. “People understand how the day-to-day stuff affects the bottom line.” Salonek had such a positive experience at St. Thomas that he was happy to continue that relationship as an adjunct faculty member for the Mini Master’s in Electronic Commerce. He now passes on the knowledge that he has applied to achieve his own success to help others succeed as well.
