Get Your “e-“ in Gear. Five Essentials to Making e-Manufacturing Happen “All we do is talk. It’s been a year and we haven’t done a thing.” shared Bill, Director of Quality, at a local manufacturing company. “Tell us, why we aren’t moving forward.” When we’re asked to come in and kick-start an initiative, consistently, one of the following are lacking in an e-manufacturing plan: Team. Team is the #1 reason e-manufacturing systems get done. It must include someone with the title CEO, President or Vice President. Otherwise, all you can do is talk—you don’t have money authority. Use a small, cross sectional team of four to ten people. To get new ideas, include a recent hire. Plan. Would you build a house without a blueprint or a due date? Don’t tackle an e-manufacturing initiative without a plan. The plan should be practical, phased and include vision—why are we doing it, objectives—what will be tackled, and a clear implementation plan—who, what, and when, as well as expected ROI. Budget. Money makes ideas become reality. Going into a project without a defined budget, is like building a house without a budget. Budget proves commitment to e-manufacturing, allows kick off, and makes measurement of estimated vs. actual cost possible. Execution. Endless brainstorming makes e-manufacturing seem like hype. After the plan has been defined, and budget allocated, do it. It sounds simple. Yet, it’s what separates winners (doers) from losers (wannabe-doers). In the 80’s, Inc. magazine asked CEO’s if you had to articulate one reason for success, 75% said “a novel idea.” Now, that same question gets “superior execution”–75%–as the answer. Iteration. Successful e-manufacturing initiatives never die—they just change. Expect phases. Expect changes. Expect a system design that allows changes without too much pain. Beware of technical shortcuts in your system design that makes the first phase cheaper and subsequent changes more expensive.
