ICP is a secure payments provider operating globally. ICP’s customers process over $50 billion annually on over 220 million international and domestic cash access requests. As a client, ICP is unique in that they have their own internal development team who has deep experience with payment protocols. They approached Intertech for assistance building a web application that could transfer and track eWallets for individuals participating in the gaming industry. The application Intertech consultants developed is part of ICP’s larger suite of products. It needed agile development while also complying with local, state, and federal regulations.
ICP needed to quickly onboard expert talent in specific skill areas to bring about their vision for a custom eWallet for the gaming industry. It would have taken months to hire the requisite skills onto their internal development team. Additionally, this new initiative was structured as a startup environment where the goal was to move quickly, build a minimum viable product, and test with the market as soon as possible. Hiring full time employees wasn’t a good fit.
Intertech consultants possessed the necessary skills to accomplish ICP’s goals under an agile development methodology. Working alongside members of ICP’s internal development team, our Intertech consultants provided experience and expertise in web applications development and the necessary technology stack. Intertech consultants led the development, coordinating with both a local team in Prior Lake, MN and offshore developers.
The custom application needed to transfer credit card funds to an eWallet that players could then use for casino games. Payments and credit card transactions are highly regulated, and the project needed to follow strict--often overlapping--guidelines from local, state, and national officials. Additionally, ICP predicted the new eWallet could be used by up to 200,000 users with over half a million transactions processed daily. The new custom solution had to be scalable to that level while still maintaining security and regulatory compliance.
Over the course of five months, Intertech’s consultants laid the groundwork and led ICP’s internal development team in the creation of a minimum viable product. The solution required building a secure, custom REST API that could handle the expected transaction load. Intertech’s senior consultant Tim Star guided the team through the process of developing a working product. Both the internal and offshore teams needed to work together closely in order for the project to succeed. Communication and clear management were important components of running a distributed, agile team.
Development followed an agile methodology with two week sprints. At the beginning of the sprint, the client would specify the features and functionalities the development team should work on. Those features get split into action items and assigned to various members of the development team. At the end of two weeks, upon testing and reviewing the progress made, the client can provide feedback. This approach allows for on-the-fly adjustments of priorities and direction for the project.
From April 1st through July 31st, the team successfully created the eWallet functionality as a mobile application. Hosted on Microsoft Azure, the development team created both an Android and iPhone version of the application. The application recently went live for customer use. Development from the internal team is still ongoing, following Intertech’s suggested roadmap for future areas of development.
ICP benefitted from our consultant’s fast onboarding and ability to quickly understand and lead a project team. The specific skills and expertise from Intertech allowed ICP to design and develop the application in a timeframe that was outside the reach of their internal development team. This rapid augmentation of an internal team is one of Intertech’s strongest selling points.
With on-time delivery of a successful application, ICP can leverage the new eWallet application and API to add additional clients and significantly grow their business in the gaming industry. The unique, custom solution sets them apart from the competition and creates an opportunity for strong market penetration.
